Composition with Blue Circle — Wassily Kandinsky

A big Abstract canvas print in brown and blue. Its warm, brooding depth makes a grounding focal work for a library, private study, boutique hotel lounge or intimate dining room, adding considered richness to a quiet wall.

Visual Presence

Deep russet, umber and ochre fill the canvas in warm, glowing layers, giving the work an inward, twilit density. A saturated blue disc anchors the upper centre, echoed by a green-ringed circle with a black core at the lower left and smaller drifting dots of red, green and gold. Dark red architectural masses, black bars and slender spires interlock through the earthen ground, the whole composition hushed, mineral and quietly mysterious.

About the Art

This work employs the geometric idiom of Kandinsky's Bauhaus years, when the circle, the straight and curving line and interlocking planes became his central vocabulary, set out in his 1926 treatise Point and Line to Plane. Kandinsky held that colour and form carried their own inner resonance independent of any depicted subject, and a composition worked in a sombre, earthen key of russets and umbers gives its floating discs and rings a concentrated, contemplative weight rather than describing a scene. This is documented context for his Bauhaus theory and practice; the specific individual work could not be verified against the catalogue record.
