Tahitian Women Bathing — Paul Gauguin

An extra large Impressionist canvas print in green and gold. Its upright poise and vivid, grounded colour suit a bedroom, wellness space or entrance hall where a tall, striking figure work can command a narrow wall.

Visual Presence

A tall golden-skinned woman stands with her back to the viewer at the water's edge, flanked by seated companions in dark patterned wraps. A broad field of emerald grass meets deep indigo water, while a vivid red-and-yellow cloth flares beneath her feet. The colour is bold and flat — warm ochre bodies set against saturated green and blue in a calm, sunlit hush.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this scene during his first Tahitian sojourn, drawn to the unhurried rhythms of island life and the bathers he observed along the shore. He set the standing nude squarely against a flattened band of grass and water, framing her with seated figures to build a quiet, decorative rhythm rather than a naturalistic record. The strong contours, unshaded planes of colour and simplified forms reflect the symbolist idiom he had developed in Brittany and carried to the Pacific. Signed by the artist, the painting is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
