Parau Api (What News?) — Paul Gauguin

An extra large Impressionist canvas print in yellow and red. Its warm colour and companionable calm suit a dining room, a lounge or a boutique reception, where two figures anchor a sociable space.

Visual Presence

Two Tahitian women sit close on a broad yellow ground, one leaning forward over a red pareo scattered with white blossoms, the other upright in a blue-and-gold striped wrap. A dark green band and russet trunk close the top of the scene, with fruit and a small box set on the sand between them. The palette is bold and primary — sunlit yellow against red, green and deep blue in flat, sculptural planes.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted Parau Api, its title meaning "what news?", during his first two-year stay in Tahiti. Two women of monumental, sculptural presence fill the pictorial space, seated together yet turned slightly away, their expressions poised between reticence and quiet knowing. Gauguin builds the image from strong primary colour used as pure design — yellow against blue, red against green — the complementary contrasts intensifying the flattened, decorative effect. The everyday intimacy of the pair gives the scene its title, a snatch of overheard exchange. The painting is held in the Galerie Neue Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
