L’univers est créé (The Universe Is Being Created) — Paul Gauguin

An oversized Symbolist canvas print in brown and black. Its cream wave-crests and single orange fish surface out of the dark ground like embers, giving a living room, executive office or restaurant wall a deep, firelit focal point.

Visual Presence

From across the room the canvas reads as one dark bronze panel, lending the wall the depth and weight of aged lacquer. The cream wave-crests and the orange fish catch whatever light there is, so the piece stays alive under low evening lamps where brighter prints would wash out. Up close the carved figures keep revealing themselves, giving a sofa wall or a long dining wall a slow second read.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin carved this scene of the universe taking form — waves, fish and figures surfacing out of darkness — for the Noa Noa Suite, the woodcuts he made on his return from Tahiti to accompany his island journal. Everything about the sheet is handmade: the block printed twice in black and brown ink, the orange, green and blue watercolour touched in by hand, even the laminated Japanese paper the artist assembled himself. This impression belonged to his friend the sculptor Francisco Durrio, hung in the posthumous Salon d’Automne, and fronts the cover of Princeton’s Noa Noa exhibition catalogue. We chose it as Gauguin the printmaker at his most experimental.
