Visual Presence

Ripe mangoes in mottled green, orange and rose are heaped on a rumpled white cloth, a slender green bottle rising behind them against a dark, dreamlike wall of pale flowers and birds. A single scarlet hibiscus lies at the front, its colour echoed in the fruit. Below, a warm ochre table anchors the scene in rich, painterly warmth.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this tropical still life during his time in the South Pacific, gathering ripe mangoes, a slender bottle and a vivid hibiscus bloom on a folded white cloth. The arrangement reflects the lessons he drew from Cézanne, whose still lifes he admired, reworked through his own love of saturated colour and flattened, decorative space. The shadowy patterned ground dissolves into suggestions of birds and blossoms, lending an ordinary tabletop an air of reverie. Signed and dated by the artist, the work distils the sensuous abundance of the tropics that drew Gauguin away from Europe.
