Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? — Paul Gauguin

A panoramic Impressionist canvas print in blue and gold. Its panoramic breadth and contemplative depth suit a gallery wall, hotel lobby or grand living space where a single commanding work can anchor the room.

Visual Presence

A sweeping panorama unfolds across a shadowed tropical grove, where Tahitian figures recline, gather and reach upward against deep midnight blues and jade greens. Warm golden-brown bodies, a pale-blue idol and flashes of ochre and coral punctuate the darkness, while the upper corners glow a mineral yellow. The mood is dreamlike and processional, colour held in rich, saturated shadow.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this monumental frieze in Tahiti as the summation of his artistic and philosophical vision, reading it, he said, from right to left: a sleeping infant, figures in the fullness of life, and an aged woman near death. A blue idol presides over the grove while a central figure reaches to pluck fruit, and a French inscription of the three title questions runs across the top corner. Gauguin regarded it as his testament, conceived after grave personal crisis and completed with deliberate finality. The painting is held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
