Three Tahitians — Paul Gauguin

A big Impressionist canvas print in brown and yellow. Its warm glow and intimate scale suit a sitting room, boutique hotel suite or dining space where a single radiant figure work can set the tone.

Visual Presence

Three figures stand close against a flat, glowing field of chrome yellow, a bare-backed man between two women who turn their gazes outward. One woman in a coral-red wrap cradles a green fruit; the other, draped in white, lifts a spray of pale blossoms. Warm golden-brown skin, saturated colour and a shallow, decorative space give the group a poised, tapestry-like stillness.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this group during his final years in the South Pacific, arranging three Tahitians in a shallow, frieze-like band that recalls the decorative flatness he prized. The central man, seen from behind, seems to choose between the two women who flank him — one offering fruit, the other flowers — a quiet meditation on temptation and choice that Gauguin left deliberately unresolved. Rich planes of unmodulated colour and a high, glowing ground reflect his rejection of European naturalism in favour of a symbolic, hand-crafted vision. The painting is held in the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.
