Landscape at Le Pouldu — Paul Gauguin

A large Impressionist canvas print in light blue and green. Its open, restful greens suit a dining room, a country house hallway or a calm executive office, where a wide horizon eases the wall.

Visual Presence

Sweeping green meadows roll toward a cluster of white farmhouses with blue-slate roofs, ribbons of rose and salmon earth cutting through the pasture. A small dark figure walks the middle distance while grazing cattle dot the field, all beneath a soft turquoise sky streaked with pale cloud. The palette is fresh and springlike — emerald and lime greens laced with coral pinks and slate blue.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this rolling view during the summer he spent at Le Pouldu, a remote hamlet on the Breton coast some twenty kilometres south-west of Pont-Aven, drawn by its rocky peninsula, windswept dunes and scattered farms. He renders the countryside in his Post-Impressionist idiom, flattening the hillside into broad interlocking planes of green and setting white-walled, blue-roofed houses against them, with cattle and a lone walker giving the scene its human measure. Signed and dated by the artist, the painting is held in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
