Shadow Street — Victor Higgins

An oversized Landscape canvas print in gold and grey. Its warm, sculptural planes and quiet modernity suit a boardroom, executive office or gallery wall, lending architectural calm and considered presence.

Visual Presence

Sunlit adobe walls glow in warm ochre and gold, broken by a shadowed gateway and blocks of soft mauve and grey where the low light falls away. Long violet-grey shadows stretch across the dusty foreground, drawing the eye toward a rounded green hillside and a pale, cool green sky. The palette is warm and modern — golden walls set against dusky mauves and muted greens in interlocking, simplified planes.

About the Art

Victor Higgins painted Shadow Street as a study of light and shade across the adobe walls and dusty lanes of a New Mexico village, working in Taos where he had settled among the Taos Society of Artists. The composition focuses on a low, raking sun that stamps the shadows of unseen trees and structures onto the man-made walls, stretching the eye across the foreground toward the sloping hills beyond. Higgins reduced the scene to interlocking, simplified planes, reflecting his interest in Cubist-influenced structure and multi-point perspective. He returned to the motif more than once, producing more than one version of the composition.
