Winter Funeral — Victor Higgins

A big Landscape canvas print in blue and grey. Its monumental scale and solemn stillness suit a gallery wall, boardroom or grand lobby, commanding the room with quiet, elemental gravity.

Visual Presence

A tiny funeral procession of cars and wagons crosses a vast field of snow, dwarfed beneath towering blue-grey mountains and a heavy, storm-laden sky. A single ridge catches a stroke of warm red light while bare, rust-branched trees cluster in the foreground above a thread of dark water. The palette is cold and monumental — snow-white and slate blue against bruised greys, broken by that lone flare of orange on the peak.

About the Art

Victor Higgins painted Winter Funeral in Taos, New Mexico, where he had settled among the Taos Society of Artists and helped found the Harwood Foundation. It is widely regarded as his masterwork and won the Benjamin Altman Prize in 1932. Below the greenish-grey Taos mountains, on the snow-covered mesa, the funeral procession is made to seem pathetically small against the immense scale of land and sky — a meditation on human frailty within an overwhelming landscape. The painting is held in the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, where it remains the collection's most celebrated work.
