Grazing Horses in Melting Snow — Victor Higgins

Visual Presence

Dark ponies graze across a broad expanse of thawing snow, their black shapes anchoring a low, open foreground. Behind them a steep green-grey hillside climbs toward a heavy bank of storm cloud, its slopes flecked with the last patches of blue-white snow. The palette is cool and earthen — olive greens, muted greys and bone-white — with a lone bare tree threading up the right edge into the leaden sky.

About the Art

Victor Higgins (1884-1949) travelled to Taos, New Mexico in 1914 and became one of the youngest founding members of the Taos Society of Artists, spending decades painting the high desert's dramatic light and shifting weather. He was admired for his winter landscapes, rendering the region's snow-covered slopes and mesas without sentiment and increasingly reducing forms to broad, planar masses beneath restless skies — Mabel Dodge Luhan remarked that he could say more with his pearly tones than most painters could with the full colour scale. A scene of horses grazing across melting snow beneath a gathering sky reflects that sustained interest in the Taos winter.
