Taos Pueblo Courtyard with Horses — Victor Higgins

An extra large Landscape canvas print in white and grey. Its pale, airy tones and restful stillness suit a wellness space, hotel lobby or dining room, bringing a sense of warm, sunlit calm to the interior.

Visual Presence

Two horses, one white and one brown-and-white, stand in a broad, sun-bleached courtyard ringed by pale cream adobe walls dotted with small blue-framed windows. A rounded adobe oven sits in the near foreground, while soft brown-mauve hills roll behind the pueblo beneath a hazy pale sky. The palette is high and luminous — creams, sand and bone-white touched with pale blue and dusky purple, bathed in gentle diffused light.

About the Art

Victor Higgins (1884-1949), a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, became known for his paintings of the Taos Pueblo, its people and the old adobe dwellings of the New Mexico valley. Settling in Taos from 1914, he drew repeatedly on the pale, earthen tonality of the high desert and the sculptural forms of pueblo architecture, and from the early 1920s pushed toward abstraction in his reductive, stylised treatment of adobe houses and mountains. A quiet courtyard of cream adobe walls, a domed horno oven and horses in soft light belongs to that enduring subject and the luminous palette for which his Taos work is admired.
