The Flowering Orchard — Vincent van Gogh

An extra large Impressionist canvas print in green and white. Its airy, springlike palette suits a bedroom, wellness space or light-filled dining room, bringing a note of renewal and calm to the room.

Visual Presence

Slender fruit trees spread their red-brown branches across a pale sky, tipped with the first white and pale-green blossom of spring. Beneath them a fresh green meadow is flecked with dabs of yellow, orange and white wildflowers, worked in short, lively strokes. The palette is light and vernal — green and white lifted by warm russet branches and touches of blue.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this blossoming orchard in the spring after his arrival in Arles, where he was captivated by the fruit trees coming into flower across the Provençal countryside. He worked quickly through a series of orchard canvases, racing the brief bloom and drawing on the clarity and cropping of the Japanese prints he admired. The delicate blossom against bare branches and open sky let him explore fresh, high-keyed colour and a lighter touch. The painting is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
