Portrait of Joseph Roulin — Vincent van Gogh

A big Impressionist canvas print in green and blue. Its bold colour and commanding gaze suit a study, a library or an executive office, giving a focal wall genuine character and warmth.

Visual Presence

A bearded postman in a deep-blue tunic and a peaked cap lettered POSTES sits square to the viewer, his ruddy face and curling chestnut beard rendered in restless strokes. Behind him a dense green ground blooms with scrolling stems, dotted florets and clustered pink and cream flowers. The palette pairs strong ultramarine and gold buttons against the teeming green, warm skin tones anchoring the busy field.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted Joseph Roulin, the postal official he befriended in Arles, as one of a series of portraits of the man he called a good soul and a devoted friend. In this version he set the sitter against a swirling, hand-drawn field of flowers and foliage inspired by decorative wallpaper, framing Roulin's steady presence in exuberant pattern. The bright uniform and cap proclaim his trade, while the ornamental ground turns a working man into something ceremonial. The painting is held in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
