View of the Alpilles — Vincent van Gogh

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in aqua and green. Its fresh, restorative palette and open horizon suit a wellness space, consulting room or light-filled reception, bringing a sense of air and calm to the room.

Visual Presence

A rolling green meadow sweeps up to a hedge of white flowering trees, their blossoms lifting in soft clouds against low blue-grey mountains. Above, a turquoise sky is worked in restless, curling strokes that echo the movement of the grass below. The palette is fresh and springlike — green, aqua and blue laced with rust-brown and touches of bone-white.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this view of the Alpilles from the walled wheatfield beside the hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he was staying. From his window he could look out across the field to the low mountain range in the distance, and he wrote to his brother Theo that he could easily do a whole series of the Alpilles, having grown accustomed to their forms. Here the rugged blue ridges are set against flowering trees and fresh spring grass, the whole surface animated by his rhythmic, curling brushwork. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
