Sunset in Montmartre — Vincent van Gogh

A large Impressionist canvas print in blue and green. Its long horizontal sweep and calm twilight palette make it a natural fit above a sideboard or sofa, or spanning a hotel lobby or executive office wall.

Visual Presence

A pale coral sun sinks through a hazy blue-green sky above a low, smoking town on the horizon. Bare wind-bent saplings and a dark fence break a sweeping grassy slope that falls across the foreground in quick diagonal strokes of green and olive. The whole panoramic scene is held in cool dusk tones, with the small warm disc of the sun the single point of heat.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this view from the heights of Montmartre during his Paris years, when he was lightening his palette and loosening his brushwork under the influence of the Impressionists. Looking out over the windmills and market gardens toward the smoking factory town below, he caught the district at dusk with rapid, feathery strokes. Left at his brother Theo's apartment, the painting later passed to Andries Bonger and his heirs before entering the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh in 1970. It is now held at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
