Landscape with Wheat Sheaves and Rising Moon — Vincent van Gogh

A huge Impressionist canvas print in blue and gold. Its warm, earthen glow and quiet grandeur suit a library, boardroom or executive office, lending the room a settled, contemplative weight.

Visual Presence

A large orange moon rises over blue mountains, its glow breaking through a rippling twilight sky. Below, a harvested field is dotted with golden-brown sheaves of wheat rendered in thick, tufted strokes. The palette is warm and earthen against cool depths — ochre and burnt orange sheaves set beneath deep blue hills and a violet-tinged sky, the whole surface woven from short, rhythmic brushmarks.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this moonrise during his stay at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, showing the moon lifting over the Alpilles beyond a field of gathered wheat sheaves. He worked on the canvas at length and, in a final pass, laid a mesh of light violet strokes across the scene to heighten its nocturnal glow; over time these have paled, so the effect now reads less dark than he intended. He described it to his brother Theo as dull yellow-ochre and violet. The tension between warm harvest and cool night gives the work its brooding calm. The painting is held in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo.
