Landscape from Saint-Rémy — Vincent van Gogh

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in green and blue. Its cool, dynamic palette and expansive horizon suit a boardroom, hotel lobby or executive office, bringing scale and quiet energy to the room.

Visual Presence

A restless green wheatfield surges in the foreground, its blades worked in swirling, current-like strokes. Beyond a low wall rise rolling blue-green hills dotted with small farm buildings and dark cypresses, backed by deeper mountains. Above, great white clouds curl across a strong blue sky. The palette is cool and vigorous — greens and blues threaded with ochre and touches of white.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this sweeping view during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, looking out across the enclosed wheatfield towards the hills and the Alpilles beyond. Confined for much of the day, he returned again and again to the landscape he could see from the grounds, translating its rolling forms into surging, rhythmic brushwork that binds field, hills and sky into one continuous movement. The energetic, curling strokes are characteristic of the work he made in this period. The painting is held in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.
