Entrance to a Quarry — Vincent van Gogh

An XL Impressionist canvas print in green and brown. Its grounded, earthen palette and quiet intensity suit a private study, library or executive office, lending the room contemplative weight.

Visual Presence

Dense, curling foliage in deep and mossy greens crowds the edges of the view, parting to reveal the raw ochre and rust-brown cut of a quarry face. Rhythmic, swirling brushwork animates every surface, from the dark trees to the tawny worked stone. The palette is muted and earthy — greens, browns and warm ochre held under a narrow strip of pale sky.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this quarry entrance while staying at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He intended it to be matt in colour and unassuming, returning for the first time in France to a deliberately muted palette. Working on it as he sensed one of his attacks approaching, he wrote to his brother Theo that there was something sad in the picture that felt healthy, and that was why it did not trouble him. He sent the canvas to Theo in Paris late that September. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
