J.M.W. Turner's Staffa, Fingal's Cave — Romantic drama at full wall scale, an oversized seascape canvas with real presence.

Visual Presence

The basalt cliffs of Staffa rise as dark silhouettes against a stormy sky pierced by a low beam of sun. Churning sea fills the foreground in flecks of grey, silver and deep blue, with a small steamer half-lost in mist below the famous sea cave. The mood is sublime, primal and dramatic.

About the Art

J.M.W. Turner painted Staffa, Fingal's Cave in 1832 following his only visit to the basalt island off the west coast of Scotland — a place that had become a Romantic literary pilgrimage site after Mendelssohn's overture of 1830 and Walter Scott's earlier writings. Turner approached it as a study in the sublime: the sea is heavy, the cliffs are silhouetted, and a low piercing beam of sunlight cuts through black cloud to make the whole scene tremble. It was one of the first Turner canvases to travel to America, and is now held in the Yale Center for British Art.
