Calvary — Egon Schiele

A large Expressionist canvas print in brown and blue. The bare brown hill fills the lower half and holds the wall still, while the white and blue cloud bands across the top carry the eye upward, so a study, a library or a hotel lobby gains height without gaining glare.

Visual Presence

Hung large, the brown earth reads as one warm matt field from across the room, so the wall gains weight instead of throwing light back at you. The white and blue cloud bands sit high on the canvas and lift the eye, which makes a low ceiling feel further away. The three small crosses on the skyline are the only sharp marks in the piece, so people find them late — it suits a wall you sit with rather than one you walk past.

About the Art

Egon Schiele (1890–1918), Expressionism, painted 1912. Egon Schiele (1890-1918), Expressionist, painted 1912. We chose it because it is Schiele's landscape at its most stripped: a whole hill of dry brown earth takes two thirds of the canvas, and the crucifixion he names is pushed up to the skyline, three small crosses among bare wind-bent saplings with a roadside shrine at the right edge. He painted it after moving from Cesky Krumlov to the countryside at Neulengbach, where landscape became a subject in its own right. The cloud bands above are worked in oil, gouache and coloured pencil. It hangs in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, inventory 480, roughly 80 by 82 centimetres.
