Small Tree in Late Autumn — Egon Schiele

An extra large Expressionist Abstract canvas print in brown and white. Its quiet, upright spareness suits a meditation or wellness space, entrance hall or study, bringing a still, contemplative note to a vertical wall.

Visual Presence

A single bare tree rises from a low mound of thickly worked earth, its pale trunk twisting upward and splitting into angular, near-leafless branches that reach across a soft, cloudy grey ground. Streaks of azure blue run through the lower limbs, and the mound below is a dense weave of brown, ochre and rust. The palette is spare and wintry — bone-grey and white against warm earthen browns.

About the Art

Egon Schiele painted this solitary tree stripped by late-autumn wind, using it as a mirror of psychological states, as he often did with landscape. The angular trunk and outstretched branches read almost as a human figure, the limb reaching right suggesting legs and the crown suggesting arms, caught mid-movement as if dancing against the weather. Streaks of azure through the bare wood heighten the sense of exposure and vulnerability. Schiele's mentor Arthur Roessler recorded that the artist asked him to sell five small oil panels quickly, of which this was one. In its bareness the tree becomes an image of persistence in the face of adversity. The painting is held in the Leopold Museum, Vienna.
