Setting Sun — Egon Schiele

A large Expressionist Abstract canvas print in green and pink. Its cool, contemplative palette and layered stillness suit a private study, library or wellness space, bringing quiet gravity to a room without demanding the eye.

Visual Presence

Slender leafless trees rise across the foreground, their dry chestnut foliage crisscrossing a flushed pink and rose sky where twin red-lilac mountains sit backlit above a pale band of water. Below, a dark green hill and stacked terraces of olive, moss and near-black are pricked with tiny points of gold. The palette is muted and cool — carmine and blush against deep greens, held in a hushed, melancholic stillness.

About the Art

Egon Schiele composed this landscape in horizontal layers of hill, water, mountain and sky, the whole intersected by the dry, stiffened branches of slender trees that seem to lean toward one another for shelter. The backlit peaks glow in a cold carmine, while the sinking sun sits only partly visible behind them. Schiele most likely drew on the coast near Trieste and the barren red-rocked islands lying off it. The motif of the setting sun lends the scene its grave, valedictory mood, a farewell pressed into cooling reds and blues. The painting is held in the Leopold Museum, Vienna.
