Trieste Fishing Boat — Egon Schiele

An oversized Expressionist Abstract canvas print in brown and grey. Its bold symmetry and rich, saturated darks anchor a study, executive office or hotel lobby, offering a single commanding focal point.

Visual Presence

A single fishing boat fills the frame head-on, its bow pushed close to the viewer and its dark hull ringed by bands of orange, ochre and deep purple. Twin red-rimmed markings sit like eyes above the waterline, while pale rigging fans out against a flat grey-brown ground and a shadowy reflection ripples beneath. The palette is dark and earthen, lit by sharp pops of red, orange and gold.

About the Art

Egon Schiele based this work on a scene he observed in the harbour of Trieste during a brief visit in May, transforming an ordinary moored fishing boat into a mosaic-like composition of flat, patched pigment. The vessel is cropped tightly and tipped toward the viewer in a vertiginous, near-flattened perspective that overturns conventional harbour views. Earthen browns and purples intermingle with bright patches of pure red and orange, building the hull as much from feeling as from observation. Rigging, sails and fittings are compressed into a dense, decorative surface. The painting is held in a private collection.
