Krumau - Crescent of Houses (The Small City V) — Egon Schiele

An oversized Expressionist Abstract canvas print in brown and orange. Its warm, intricate density and grounded browns bring considered weight to a study, boardroom or private library without competing for the eye.

Visual Presence

A tight crescent of old houses packs the frame, their brown and umber roofs folding into one another above ochre and grey walls dotted with small blue-shuttered windows. Bright lines of laundry flutter red, blue and white along the left edge, and a few golden-lit facades break the density. The palette is dark and earthen — deep browns and ochres, warmed by amber and pricked with sharp reds and blues.

About the Art

Egon Schiele portrayed the Southern Bohemian town of Krumau, his mother's birthplace, in this densely built city landscape seen from the Schlossberg hill. He discarded the background houses, the bridge and the far riverbank, concentrating instead on the characteristic crescent of houses crowded tightly together. Rather than faithful topography, Schiele pursued a dense, seemingly organic texture in which roofs and walls interlock like living tissue. Brown and ochre tones dominate, warmed by patches of amber and enlivened by strung laundry and small coloured windows. The composition is one of his most accomplished cityscapes in colour and structure. The painting is held in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
