Saint Francis Kneeling in Meditation — El Greco

An oversized Renaissance canvas print in brown and grey. The friar's pale face and crossed hands glow out of the deep umber dark, bringing a hushed, monastic stillness to a hallway, study or hotel reception wall.

Visual Presence

At wall scale the deep umber darkness makes this the quietest surface in the room — a wall that lowers the light and slows the pace of a hallway or office the way a chapel doorway does. The silvery grey of the friar's cloak picks up whatever light the room offers, so the pale profile and crossed hands read clearly from the far end of a corridor. The gold of the small skull and the patch of blue sky at the top give the dark one warm and one cool accent, keeping so large a shadow from ever feeling flat.

About the Art

El Greco — Doménikos Theotokópoulos — painted Saint Francis so often that at least a dozen versions of this composition survive, evidence of the saint's enormous popularity in Toledo, where the Greek painter made his career. Every object is deliberate: the book stands for Francis's devotional study, the skull for the certainty of death, and the crucifix receives his prayer as the painting asks the viewer to meditate on the saint himself. Possibly still in El Greco's possession when he died, it entered the Art Institute of Chicago through the Robert A. Waller Memorial Fund. We chose it for the two pale hands crossed in the dark.
