The Pink Peach Tree — Vincent van Gogh

A large Impressionist canvas print in light blue and green. Its buoyant blue-and-blossom palette lifts a dining room, hotel lobby or sunlit reception space, bringing warmth and a sense of spring to a large wall.

Visual Presence

A peach tree in full bloom rises at the centre, its branches laden with white and pale-pink blossom against a luminous turquoise sky brushed with soft cloud. A russet-orange paling fence runs along the right, closing off a pale field freckled with green and lilac. The palette is bright and buoyant — clear blue, blossom-white and warm orange in vigorous, dabbed strokes.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this flowering peach tree in the spring of 1888, in the weeks after he settled in Arles and found the surrounding orchards bursting into bloom. He threw himself into a rapid campaign of blossom studies, working outdoors to capture the short-lived flowering before it passed. Here he sets the single tree against a high, radiant sky and a simple wooden fence, building the blossom from thick, broken touches of white and pink so the whole surface seems to shimmer. The bright, contrasting colour reflects his study of Japanese prints. The painting is held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
