Enclosed Field with Peasant — Vincent van Gogh

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in gold and grey. Its grounded, earthen palette and sweeping composition suit an executive office, library or boardroom, lending considered weight and a sense of open country to a wide wall.

Visual Presence

A lone peasant works a broad, sun-bleached field of ochre and pale gold, its furrows sweeping across the foreground in restless, hatched strokes. Beyond a low wall lie olive-dotted hills, a scatter of farm buildings and rising ranges of blue-grey rock. Above, a deep blue sky turns in loose spirals with two curling white clouds. The palette is warm and earthen below, cool and mineral above.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted this view during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1889, looking out over the walled wheatfield he could see from his window and the Alpilles hills beyond. Confined to the grounds for much of his time there, he returned again and again to this enclosed field through the changing seasons. The solitary figure at work and the encircling wall speak quietly to his own circumstances, while the swirling sky and driving brushwork carry the charged energy of his Provence landscapes. The painting is held in the Národní Galerie, Prague.
