Tree Trunks in the Grass — Vincent van Gogh

A big Impressionist canvas print in green and grey. Its close, verdant intimacy suits a study, library or wellness space, drawing the eye into a quiet patch of spring ground.

Visual Presence

Two pine trunks rise at the left in ribboned strokes of blue, grey, rust and cream, their rough bark rendered almost abstractly. Beyond them a spring meadow sweeps away in vivid green, thickly sown with white and yellow flowers and slender blue-violet stems. The palette is fresh and close-toned — cool green grass scattered with pale blossom and touches of red-brown, drawn into a strong diagonal that presses the foreground toward the eye.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted Tree Trunks in the Grass in late April 1890, during his final weeks at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He took a close, low view of a patch of grassland, cropping the pine trunks so that their gnarled bark and the flowering meadow fill the whole surface without a horizon. The abrupt shift in scale between the massive trunks and the fine grasses, together with a strong diagonal, gives the scene an intense spatial pull. He built the flowers from small circling dabs and firm contours, a study in nearness rather than distance. The painting is held in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo.
