About this artwork

Two angular profiles facing inward, built from flat planes of pale yellow, pink and dove grey — a single dot for each eye, a small red mark for each mouth. The whole image sits in a field of saffron ochre. Klee is doing more with less here than almost anywhere else: the faces are barely faces, the relationship is barely a relationship, and yet there is a clear sense of two beings holding each other in the same gaze. This is Klee's late mastery of the geometry of feeling.
