Redgreen and Violet-Yellow Rhythms — Paul Klee

A big Modern Abstract canvas print in red and green. Its rich, tessellated colour rewards close looking, making it a considered focal point for a library, a boutique hotel lounge or a collector's dining room.

Visual Presence

Dozens of hand-drawn squares and rectangles interlock across the surface in deep reds, crimsons, teals, ochres and warm greys, each block softly brushed so no edge is quite mechanical. Small dark fir trees sprout among the cubes, seeding a landscape within the abstraction. The palette pulses between warm and cool, dense and jewel-like, with an intimate, hand-built rhythm.

About the Art

Paul Klee made Redgreen and Violet-Yellow Rhythms early in his sustained turn to oil, working on cardboard in a series of small panels whose subject he described as magic gardens and landscapes. Pulsing squares and rectangles of shifting hue build a Cubist ground, while little fir trees scattered among the blocks conjure an enchanted, half-glimpsed forest and lend the composition a sense of place. Klee exhibited the work in his 1920 one-man show at the Galerie Neue Kunst Hans Goltz in Munich. It is now held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
