Black Columns in a Landscape — Paul Klee

A large Colourful Abstract canvas print in yellow and pink. Its airy, faceted palette suits a light-filled study, boutique reception or considered living space, bringing colour and quiet intellect without weight.

Visual Presence

Faceted planes of rose-pink, buttery yellow and soft grey interlock like panes of stained glass across a dreaming landscape. Slim black columns and a thin black cross rise through the composition, anchoring a small red pavilion, a green leaf-form and pale domed shapes against a lilac-grey sky. The mood is delicate and gently unreal, the colours washed and luminous.

About the Art

Paul Klee painted this watercolour after renting a large studio in the Schloss Suresnes, a neglected eighteenth-century palace in Munich's Schwabing artists' quarter. According to his son Felix, the palace grounds and the nearby Englischer Garten inspired the scene. Klee dissolves the setting into a mosaic of coloured planes, threading through it recognisable motifs — slender Ionic columns, a broad chestnut leaf, a thin black cross, a small red pavilion and a boat drifting on the River Isar. Rather than describe a place, he builds a poetic architecture of colour and line. The work is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
