Heroic Strokes of the Bow — Paul Klee

A huge Geometric Abstract canvas print in blue and black. Its upright rhythm and graphic force suit a music room, gallery wall or executive corridor, holding attention as a single commanding statement.

Visual Presence

Bold black bars sweep and zigzag across a field of luminous violet-blue, thickening into dots, hooks and short strokes like marks in an unknown script. The heavy gestures gather into loose horizontal registers, punctuated by circular knots and comb-like clusters. The effect is emphatic and musical — dark rhythm surging over glowing colour.

About the Art

Paul Klee titled this late work after the gestural sweep of a bow drawn across the strings of an instrument, one of many pieces in which he sought a visual equivalent for music. He built it from pigmented paste laid over newspaper mounted on cloth, then drew the broad black signs directly into the surface. The forms — bars, hooks, dots and combs — read as both notation and pure movement, ranged in registers like lines on a stave. Made as illness simplified and enlarged his vocabulary, it distils feeling into a spare, powerful alphabet of marks. The painting is held in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
