The Starry Night — Vincent van Gogh

An XL Impressionist canvas print in blue and yellow. Its charged blue expanse and luminous stars bring depth and presence to a gallery wall, executive office or hotel lobby, commanding the room without unsettling it.

Visual Presence

A vast night sky churns in thick spirals of deep blue and cobalt, studded with radiant haloed stars and a glowing crescent moon in warm yellow. A dark flame-like cypress surges up the left edge while a quiet village with a slender church spire nestles beneath rolling blue hills. The palette is dominated by turbulent blues lit by bursts of gold and cream, charged with restless, rhythmic movement.

About the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night from the window of his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had voluntarily admitted himself. The scene combines the view of the surrounding hills and sky with elements drawn from imagination, including the prominent cypress and the compact village with its northern-style church. He described writing to his brother Theo of his fascination with the night and its stars. Rendered in his characteristic energetic impasto, the swirling firmament has become one of the most recognised images in Western art. The painting is held in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
