Angelus Militans — Paul Klee

An oversized Geometric Abstract canvas print in blue and yellow. Its solemn indigo weight and quiet monumentality suit a contemplative wellness space, a private study or a gallery wall where a single commanding presence is wanted.

Visual Presence

A pale, marbled figure stands almost full-height against a saturated indigo ground, one simple face marked by a single ringed eye and a small square mouth. Broad wings of acid yellow spread to either side, while a heavy violet-brown form floats behind the head like a shadow, and a note of magenta grounds the base. Bold black outlines hold every shape in place, giving the whole the leaded gravity of stained glass.

About the Art

Paul Klee painted Angelus Militans in his final year, one of a large body of angel works made as illness pressed on him. He built the image on rough burlap with oil and coloured paste, letting the coarse weave break the pigment into a mottled, weathered surface. Thick charcoal-dark contours divide the figure into flat panels, so the striding "militant angel" reads at once as a body and as a window of coloured glass. The angel here is unarmed and ambiguous — neither wholly consoling nor triumphant — reflecting Klee's guarded relationship to the history unfolding around him.
