Crescent of Houses — Egon Schiele

Visual Presence

A tangled hillside village painted from above — buildings crowding against each other like a single shifting organism. Roofs lean, walls slant, no window aligns with the next, and the whole town becomes one twisted body, drawn in sharp edges of ochre, mustard, dirty rose and silver-green.

About the Art

This is Schiele's view of Krumau (Český Krumlov), seen with his draughtsman's line everywhere while the perspective stays flattened, almost map-like. It is Expressionism at its most architectural — buildings carrying the same nervous energy as his figures.
