Vairaumati tei oa (Her Name is Vairaumati) — Paul Gauguin

An oversized Impressionist canvas print in blue and gold. Its mythic poise and saturated colour suit a boardroom, a designer's reception or a private gallery wall, where a single commanding figure sets the tone.

Visual Presence

A seated nude woman with a deep blue headdress dominates the foreground, her warm brown body turned in profile upon a blue floral cloth, a fruit-laden dish at her feet. Behind her a dark carved idol looms among rose-pink blossoms, blue boulders and a green sward, with a standing figure at the right in vermilion. The palette is bold and jewel-like — cobalt, rose, orange and green set in flat, singing planes.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin drew the subject of this painting from Polynesian myth: Vairaumati was the woman chosen by the god Oro to be his earthly consort and to found a new race of people. When Oro descended to her on a rainbow, she is said to have welcomed him with fruit and finely woven cloth — details Gauguin folds into the scene through the offered dish and patterned fabric. A large carved image of Oro presides in the background, half idol, half apparition. The seated figure is imagined rather than a portrait of the model who posed. The work is held in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.
