Maternity (Three Women on the Seashore) — Paul Gauguin

Visual Presence

Three Tahitian women stand and sit against a burning band of orange sky and deep blue-green hills, one seated low and cradling an infant at her breast. A vivid vermilion wrap and a strong green skirt anchor the standing pair, their skin warm brown against the cool ground. The palette is saturated and hushed at once — flaming orange over sombre greens, held in a slow, ceremonial stillness.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this scene of three women on a Tahitian shore during his second Polynesian period, weaving the recurring theme of motherhood through his island imagery. The composition, with its standing attendants framing the seated nursing figure, echoes the structure of European Adoration paintings, lending an everyday moment the weight of ritual. The tall central woman, holding a garland of white flowers with clasped hands, forms a devotional backdrop to the mother and child below. A second, closely related version of the subject survives, and the work is held in the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg.
