Matamoe (Landscape with Peacocks) — Paul Gauguin

A huge Impressionist canvas print in green and gold. Its vertical lift and jubilant colour suit a hotel lobby, a stairwell or a generous dining room, where its tropical depth draws the eye upward.

Visual Presence

A lush Tahitian valley climbs the canvas in bands of jade, emerald and ochre, a slender palm arcing across a lilac-grey peak. A near-naked figure raises an axe beside a thatched hut, while below, a green-tailed peacock and a rose-pink bird stroll a bright grassy foreground. The colour is exuberant and flattened — deep greens, warm golds and earthen rusts pressed into a decorative, tapestry-like whole.

About the Art

Paul Gauguin painted this valley view after moving from Papeete to the village of Mataiea on Tahiti's south coast. He gave it the Tahitian title Matamoe, a word variously read as "in the old days," "once," or "death," and paired in his own catalogue with the French subtitle for death. Gauguin described watching a native man raise an axe to fell a tree, and the play of colour across metal, skin and foliage that the moment released; the same encounter fed his related canvas Man with an Axe. The peacocks introduced into the foreground lend the scene an air of paradise. The painting is held in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.
