Delicate Tension (No. 85) — Wassily Kandinsky

A tall Geometric Abstract canvas print in white and grey. Its precise geometry and buoyant balance suit a design studio, executive office or gallery wall, bringing intellectual clarity and quiet energy to a considered interior.

Visual Presence

Fine ruled lines and a tall diagonal mast rise across a pale ivory ground, gathering into a floating half-circle packed with chequered blocks of yellow, red, blue and grey. A grey triangle cradling a golden disc anchors the upper field, while radiating pink and black lines fan outward past scattered circles and squares. The palette is crisp and primary, buoyant against the quiet paper tone.

About the Art

Wassily Kandinsky made this watercolour at the Bauhaus during the school's most rationalist phase, when he pursued precise correspondences between form and colour and drew with ruler and compass. It belongs to a series of geometric works from the early 1920s in which the circle and the triangle — the two shapes he considered most strongly contrasting — float and intersect within open space. Closed forms are filled with colour and crossed by fine straight lines, held in the taut, weightless balance the title names. The work is held in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.
