Fleurs — Frits Van den Berghe

A large Expressionist canvas print in olive and orange. The whole surface is packed edge to edge with cut petals and leaves on a warm mustard-olive ground, with no sky and no empty corner anywhere, so a living room, a dining room or a restaurant wall gains a tall block of worked colour where a single small picture would have been swallowed.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres tall the mustard-olive ground fills the wall with a warm, slightly dusty light, so a living room or a dining room reads softer and older with it up, closer to candlelight than daylight. From the far side of the room the detail knits together and only three things carry — the crimson bloom low on the left, the vermilion star-shaped flower at the bottom right and the violet leaf in the upper left corner — so the eye travels a slow diagonal across the wall instead of stopping dead. Up close the paint is scraped thin over the weave and ridged along every petal edge, so lamplight raking across it keeps finding new texture at arm's length.

About the Art

Frits Van den Berghe (1883–1939), Expressionism, painted 1928. Frits Van den Berghe (1883–1939), Flemish Expressionism, painted 1928. We chose it because a still life is where you can watch him change. He joined the art colony at Sint-Martens-Latem in 1904 alongside Gustave De Smet and Constant Permeke and helped build the Latem school; the war sent him to the Netherlands, and Freud came back with him. By the late twenties his painting ran on dream and hallucination, and here the flowers break apart into cut plates and scraped ridges rather than blooms. Oil on canvas, 65 by 46 centimetres, Mu.ZEE Kunstmuseum aan Zee, Ostend, SM000012, catalogue raisonné 257.
