The Monster — Frits Van den Berghe

A large Surrealist canvas print in grey and brown. The scraped pale field and the sand-coloured ground spread wide and flat with almost no dark mass in them, and one black line loops right across the picture from edge to edge, so a living room, a study or a boardroom wall gains a long horizontal pull instead of a single point to stare at.

Visual Presence

Printed two to three metres wide the pale grey and sand field takes whatever daylight the room has and spreads it flat, so a living room or an office reads lighter with this up rather than heavier, even with the black loop and the dark green corners in it. From the far side of the space only three things carry — the sweeping black line, the pink body lying across the middle and the small navy shape with its dark spots at the lower right — so it holds a wide sightline without turning into busy pattern. Close up the wall breaks open again into scraped streaks, little drawn faces and hairline gold lines, which is why this suits a wall people sit beside rather than glance at once.

About the Art

Frits Van den Berghe (1883–1939), Expressionism, painted 1928. Frits Van den Berghe (1883–1939), Belgian Surrealism, painted 1928. We chose it for the year he broke with the group that made him. He had spent a decade among the Sint-Martens-Latem Expressionists; then he cut that loose and let the figures go strange — a muscular body running up into an oversized head, puzzled small faces drifting through a space with no floor and no horizon. The Museum of Fine Arts Ghent calls that head the menacing power of the subconscious. It reached the museum in 1992 as a gift from Lydie Mees-Desplenter, out of the Jozef Mees collection, which held it by 1932.
