Composition with Little Figures (Paris period) — Wassily Kandinsky

Visual Presence

Bold black tent-like peaks stride across a pale ivory ground strewn with confetti dots and tiny bright squares. A deep brown disc and a toothed orange wedge weight the left, balanced by rectangles of crimson, soft purple and a green panel filled with playful running creatures. The palette is light and festive — black structure over ivory, punctuated by warm brown, orange, red and mauve.

About the Art

Kandinsky's Paris years, begun when he settled at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1933, brought a new organic vocabulary of small, animated forms — striped rods, dotted grounds and tiny embryonic shapes echoing the biology plates he collected. Here strong dark contours give structure while pastel rectangles and scattered running forms enliven a pale ivory field, joining the rigour of his earlier abstraction to a lighter, teeming playfulness. The confetti-like flecks and little figures are hallmarks of that documented Parisian phase; no specific record of this individual canvas was verified.
