Paul Klee's Spiral Screw Flowers II — from his final Dusseldorf series before the Nazis dismissed him, concentric forms between plant and screw-thread, on canvas wall art.

Visual Presence

Rounded organic forms cluster toward the left and centre of the picture plane, with a smaller grouping to the right, each built from concentric layers that move from pale near-white cores outward through mid-greys to deep charcoal, creating depth through tonal gradation alone. A thin curved white line sweeps diagonally across the upper portion of the image. The restricted palette of blacks, greys, and near-whites, combined with soft edges suggesting ink or watercolour wash, gives the work a quiet, subdued atmosphere.

About the Art

Paul Klee created Spiral Screw Flowers II as the second work in a small series of late-period drawings exploring concentric organic forms threaded along curving stems that suggest both botanical growth and mechanical screw threads. The series was made during his final teaching year at the Düsseldorf Academy, in the months before he was dismissed by the Nazi regime. This work shares the dark watercolour palette and dense central composition of its sister pieces, all of which are now held in major modernist collections.
