Visual Presence

Against a sky washed from apricot into soft rose, a great domed hill of lilac snow rises over a hushed white landscape. Two black-cloaked monks stand facing each other on the right while a dark brown bear pads quietly between them; a small wooden church sits snow-laden in the distance. The palette is tender and cool — pink, lilac and snow-white pierced by the two upright blacks.

About the Art

Nicholas Roerich painted And We Are Not Afraid in 1922 as part of his Sancta series, six connected canvases made during his time in the United States whose titles each open with the words "And we…", read in sequence as a single unfolding parable of monastic life. Here an elder and a young monk stand in a snowbound northern landscape as a bear approaches unhindered — an allusion to Saint Sergius of Radonezh, who, living alone in the forest, is said to have tamed a wild bear that came to him for food. The scene distils quiet fearlessness and mutual peace. The work is held at the Roerich Museum, Moscow.
