Mount "M" — Nicholas Roerich

A huge Symbolist canvas print in blue and brown. Its cool serenity and soaring scale suit a boardroom, executive office or spacious lobby, bringing altitude, clarity and calm to a large wall.

Visual Presence

Sharp snow-clad summits rise in brilliant white and steely blue across the upper canvas, their glaciers folding down into deep cobalt shadow. In the foreground, great mauve and rose-brown ridges sweep inward to a narrow pale stream threading the valley floor. The palette is cool and luminous — blues, violet-browns and snow-white beneath a clear, faintly green-blue sky.

About the Art

Nicholas Roerich painted Mount "M" in 1931, one of the many Himalayan studies that occupied him after he settled in the Kullu Valley of northern India. Following his Central Asian expeditions, the mountains became his central and enduring subject, and he returned to their peaks, light and shifting colour in hundreds of tempera works. Here he sets radiant snow summits against dark foreground ridges, using flattened, simplified planes to capture the immense scale and rarefied clarity of the high range. The work is held at the Nicholas Roerich Museum, New York.
