Mohammed the Prophet — Nicholas Roerich

Visual Presence

A robed figure in pale gold stands on a dark ridge, gazing across an immense sweep of pink, apricot and umber mountains that recede in folded ranges beneath a soft grey sky. To the right, a luminous apparition glows within a rising plume of rose-tinted smoke. The palette is warm and radiant — pinks, oranges and earthen browns bathed in a mystical, otherworldly light.

About the Art

Nicholas Roerich painted Mohammed the Prophet in 1925 for his Banners of the East series, a cycle of works portraying the great spiritual teachers and founders of the world's faiths — among them Christ, Moses, Confucius and the Buddha — as a testimony to the shared roots of human belief. The scene evokes the Hira cave on Jabal al-Nur near Mecca, where the Prophet Muhammad withdrew in solitude and is said to have received his first revelation. Roerich renders the moment as a solitary figure before a radiant vision, set within a vast, luminous mountain world. The work is held at the Roerich Museum, Moscow.
