Monhegan, Maine — Nicholas Roerich

Visual Presence

A burning orange sun hangs low in a molten sky that shifts from deep rose to amber above a wall of mauve and violet headlands. Below, a pale band of still water divides the cliffs from rolling foreground hills striped in ochre, olive and dusky pink. The whole scene glows with the flattened, saturated warmth of a coastal dusk.

About the Art

Nicholas Roerich painted Monhegan, Maine in 1922 during a stay on the remote island off the New England coast, part of a body of seascapes he grouped as his "Ocean" series. The visit proved pivotal: it was here that Roerich persuaded his American followers to found the institutions that became the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York. Working in his characteristic tempera-flat manner, he reduced the granite headlands and open water to broad, simplified planes of luminous colour, seeking the essential mood of the place rather than topographic detail. The work is held at the International Centre of the Roerichs, Moscow.
