White Cross — Wassily Kandinsky

An extra large Modern Abstract canvas print in blue and black. Its dark, contemplative depth and glowing forms suit a refined lounge, wellness space, executive study or hotel suite, bringing quiet drama to an intimate wall.

Visual Presence

Against a deep near-black ground clouded with plum, blue and umber, a large pale double disc glows at the upper right, overlapped by a soft grey crescent. Crossing bars of crimson form a slender cross at the centre, threaded by a sinuous blue ribbon that loops down into the dark. A small green circle, a deep-blue dot and a bright white cross float in the lower field, each shape held apart in quiet, luminous suspension.

About the Art

Wassily Kandinsky made White Cross during his early Bauhaus years, when his abstraction moved decisively toward geometry — the circle, the cross, the straight and curving line becoming a precise vocabulary of form. Set against an unusually dark, atmospheric ground, the picture balances a great pale disc against the small white cross that gives the work its name, with radiating lines and floating circles arranged as a composition of inner tension and resonance. For Kandinsky each element carried its own spiritual charge, and here the darkness lends the drifting shapes a cosmic, weightless quality. The painting is held in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.
