Circle and Rays on Ochre (Bauhaus period) — Wassily Kandinsky

A large Colourful Abstract canvas print in gold and red. Its warm ground and poised central form suit a library, dining room or a hotel suite, offering grounded warmth and a quiet, contemplative focal point.

Visual Presence

A firm black circle with a pale inner ring hovers on a warm earthen ochre ground, crossed by fine gold axes and trailing a fan of thin lines that converge to a single point below. Floating rectangles of red, deep maroon, blue, green and yellow orbit the ring, while a magenta bar and a small pale triangle close the composition at the foot. The palette is warm and grounded — ochre and black anchoring bright, weightless colour.

About the Art

The circle became Kandinsky's central motif during his Bauhaus years, the phase Nina Kandinsky called his "circle period." He described the circle as "the synthesis of the greatest oppositions," combining the concentric and the eccentric in a single form, and later wrote to the historian Will Grohmann in 1930 that it was for him "a link with the cosmic." A disc tethered by ruled axes and orbited by detached rectangles of pure colour is squarely in the vocabulary he set out in Point and Line to Plane (1926). This is documented context for that method; the specific individual work could not be verified against the catalogue record.
